Mink Lungs - I'll Take It
Before I’d listened to this album I’d read that Mink Lungs were a Pixies-esque indie band, so when I did hear it I was rather surprised. Yes, there are definite Pixies influences, nbut only if the Pixies happened to be at a party, taking something illegal and jamming psychedelia. The surf guitars and Bossa Nova/Trompe Le Monde song structures are all here, as are the paranoid lyrics of Frank Black at his best, but it’s impossible to ignore the other influences here, which to my mind are far more prominent. The mildly unnerving vocal style and the music itself is reminiscent of Frank Zappa and even The Residents at the best of times, plus there is plenty of Zappa’s slightly more perverted lyrical style on show. And it all works, at times. There are many, many good moments on this album but there are equally as many forgettable ones and when an album drags out over 17 songs (even if only two of them are longer than three minutes) having songs that you can’t be bothered to listen to isn’t a good thing. It’s an interesting album, not an easy listen, but rewarding if you have the time. It won’t change your life, but it might enrich it slightly.
