Father of Boon - Absolutely Everything is Excellent
“Three tracks for £3.50 from some unheard of band?” I thought, “Rip off.” Proving simultaneously how cheap I am and how wrong I can be. The first e.p. from these cheeky cockney chappies is really worth investing in, because they’re something quite special really. A five piece band complete with saxophone, keyboards, guitar, drum, bass and just about everyone on vocals they play music which is a bit like what Mike Skinner would be doing if he was fronting a complete Spoon-esque indie band rather than just a repetitive keyboard loop. The vocals, which are quite similar to those of The Streets in that they just seem to be cockney guys talking and shouting a bit, might put some people off but those of you who aren’t looking for operatic warbling in their music could well be very impressed with what is on offer here. The title track is the highlight, building up layer after layer of music beneath uplifting lyricism until a rather wonderful peak. I’m looking forward to any full length releases the future might hold.
