Mogwai - Ten Rapid
Early Mogwai is really essential listening. This is one such example. Ten Rapid is similar to it’s predecessor (Young Team) in that it too offers big, brooding, sparkly slabs of spaced out post rock with really quiet bits building up to really loud bits and lots of noises you didn’t even know a guitar could make in between but differs in a couple of ways too. One, there are vocals on some songs (shock horror), but they are well handled and add considerably to the mood. And two, the material here is much shorter than many Mogwai tracks, no twenty minute loud/quiet guitar marathons, just great music. The album is worth buying just to hear Helicon 1, possibly the most moving and beautiful song ever committed to record (though still not a patch on the live version) but that’s not to say the other songs aren’t great too. Summer is intense and energetic while Helicon 2 is quiet and brooding, this is Mogwai on top of their game, trying their hands at anything and getting it just right.
