MC Lars - Radio Pet Fencing
An American Anglophile rapper who sounds something like a cross between Licensed To Ill era Beastie Boys and Atom And His Package (his love of Atom is so great that there is a whole song, Atom You’re Awesome, dedicated to the man with the Package). As such the tone here is very light hearted, the music is fun and fast and funny. And as such it would be very easy to dismiss this as a novelty act. That would be foolish though as under the surface of this music you find a very talented, clever and socially conscious MC whose post-modern lyricism puts him a step above the bling brigade. With songs ranging from the weird (and quite annoying) Humphrey The Whale to the heartbreak of Sarah there is good depth to this album which means it stands up to repeated listening in a way that many artists doing a similar thing fail to manage. The only possible complaint I can have about this album is that it isn’t quite as good as his new stuff, but when you think about it that’s a good thing, isn’t it?
