Mad Library - Let's Play
To be honest, this album starts rather slowly. Full Of Wander is a smouldering track but if something smoulders and doesn’t go bang you feel kind of cheated by the end. I guess it is in the title, it does meander a lot and while the meandering gets a bit more energetic towards the end it still doesn’t really go anywhere. Big Kitty on the other hand is music with a mission, a mission to make you groove. Yeah, I know how bad that sounds but give it a listen then tell me you didn’t find yourself dancing at least a bit and I’ll slap you for being such a dirty liar. From here on in the funk is unbearably good and the jazzy saxophone will just take you to heaven and back and just maybe there again. They do save the best for last though in the form of Sounds Like Time, a big, melancholic but ultimately uplifting song, by far the best on the album. Admittedly it can’t compete with their live performance (where the wailing sax is enough to send shivers down my spine) but as with many great live bands the CD is best used as a reminder of how great they are to watch.
