Geoff Dyer - Yoga For People Who Can't Be Bothered To Do It

I think it’s fair to say that Geoff Dyer has led an interesting life. Not that this is a biography, more of a compilation of short pieces of biographical travel writing. You know all those things you say you should do some day but never do? Geoff Dyer is the guy that does them. He seems to spend his whole life trying to find The Zone, a place (which can be anywhere) where your mind is totally overwhelmed by the surroundings and nothing else matters. In doing this he seems to end up in a lot of interesting places with a lot of interesting people doing lots of interesting things taking a lot of interesting substances. He is very witty, clever and has a penchant for quoting poets and philosophers, and as such is perfectly suited to describe all of these things he does to us, the people who don’t do them. A compulsive and manageable read, despite even the apparent intellectualism (in a stoned, using long words while referencing Coleridge and Freud kind of way at least), it is hard not to get drawn in to his adventures. Makes you want to jump on a passing freight train and see where you end up.
