Comeg – Perfect Summer

I’ll get the good points out of the way first. It’s is very well recorded, produced and put together for a home recording. Unfortunately that’s where it ends.
Recipe for Comeg - Perfect Summer
Take equal parts Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Cure plus a dollop of Ocean Colour Scene
Mix in with these a sprinkling of uninspired songs
Baste in a sauce of competent yet unimaginative musicianship and then half bake for forty minutes.
Be sure to drain any remaining passion before serving.
Comeg mix pop and country and then try and make it dark. This can be done well (see Neil Young and Crazy Horse for reference) but in this case it isn’t. Not for any particular reason, just that they commit that terrible crime of mediocrity. Coemgen Savage’s voice is Robert Smith if he’d been to Fame Academy. The guitars sounds like any other pop rock band you’ve ever heard in the Top 40 with a slight Hank Williams infatuation. The bass, keyboards and drumming are just there, it takes effort to even notice them. Having mediocre material is bad but can still be pulled off (occasionally) if you do it with gusto. This barely manages a breeze-o. Maybe the good production is the CD's downfall, stripping it of any passion and rawness the band display live, I don’t know, I haven’t seen them. I have a terrible feeling though that they’re just not very good.
