The Chemical Brothers - Singles 93-03
So, a singles compilation from the dance duo which is as interesting a look at the history of the Brothers as it is an album itself. Ranging from their early big beat house to their latest chilled out world music there’s something for everyone here, but for me it’s the middle of their career so far that was the best part. This is largely because there are some really fantastic songs there, dance classics like Hey Boy Hey Girl and Block Rockin’ Beats, genius chilled out pop like Out Of Control and Let Forever Be or the album highlight (and reason I bought this CD) The Private Psychedelic Reel. Their early music though is good but won’t appeal to non-dance fans and their newest songs will probably alienate their older fans while at the same time not being very good anyway. The Test is an exception, brilliant chill out music, but Get Yourself High borders on being awful and not even collaborating with The Flaming Lips can save The Golden Path from being rather mediocre. There is also a bonus disc of unreleased tracks and remixes but there isn’t anything there that you’d really want to go back and listen to again and again. Overall the album is worth getting for the great songs that are on it (especially if you can pick it up on the cheap) but you’d better keep that “skip track” button to hand, just in case.
