Blur – Parklife

First of all I’d like to dispel the often murmured belief that this is Blur’s best album. It isn’t. Not to me at any rate. It is good though; don’t get me wrong, but not the best. It is a great little album full of off kilter pop songs that you probably already know off by heart, and here lies the albums greatest strength. Some of the songs are really, really good. Girls and Boys is a great opener and one you’ll love singing along to if you can get the lyrics in the right order. Tracy Jacks gives more of the same straight after. End of a Century slows it down a bit and provides my favourite song from the album. Parklife gives us a great look into the life of an unemployed cockney. By anyone’s standards this is a great start to an album. Some of the later songs are a bit forgettable. The verse from To The End grates me slightly. The less said about Sham 69 rip off Bank Holiday the better. I’m making it sound like it trails out after the first few songs which is unfair, Clover Over Dover and Magic America are both great while Jubilee and This is a Low give welcome changes of pace. I think the best way to describe this album is that it has some brilliant moments but you might want to keep the track skip button handy if you’re not in a patient mood.
