Alkaline Trio/One Man Army - Split

BYO Records

The BYO Split series is fast becoming a thing of legend. The series has seen such legendary splits as Leatherface/Hot Water Music, Anti Flag/Bouncing Souls and Rancid/NoFX. Now comes a split between the band some regard as the hottest punk band on the planet right now (Alkaline Trio) and One Man Army, whose 8 year career has made them one of the stalwarts of the US punk scene. Such a split breeds huge anticipation, particularly when both bands have written completely new material for the release, and gladly it doesn't disappoint.

Alkaline Trio are up first, with six songs of their own brand of angst-ridden punk, continuing the triumphant form their entire back catalogue has shown. As usual Matt and Derek share vocal duties, each having their own distinctive voices, and bringing something new to each song. The songs are full of the dark venom that we have come to expect from this band, and the anthemic angst shown here just simply cannot be beaten. Tracks such as 'Sadie' are a perfect example of the Alkaline Trio winning formula, a song that slowly builds from a slowly brooding number into an anthemic punk ballad, all the while tied together by Matt Skiba's awesome voice.

One Man Army's contribution is an altogether lighter affair, with a classic punk-rock sound, it is easy to see why this band are held in such regard. The UK has not seen enough of this band, but tracks like 'The TV Song' and 'All The Way' tell me that we really should. The tracks are all driven along at a great pace by Chip, and the simple yet effective melodies are a perfect compliment. If you havent heard this band yet, use this split as an excuse too, believe me you will not be dissapointed. I will admit that before this record I had not heard enough of this band, but I am now going to go out of my way to make sure I do. A great contribution...

Basically this record is a must buy. If you dont know any of the bands, you really should and this release is a great start, and if you do know them you need it for the new songs. So thats a 9 out of 10 then....
