The Faint – Blank Wave Arcade
The first thing you’ll notice when you listen to this album is that there is a certain similarity to a lot of 80’s synth rock here, especially the likes of The Cure, Joy Division and Alien Sex Fiend. You’re right, but don’t let that put you off. While on the outside the Faint seem are flaunting their love for these bands shamelessly, deep down they’re definitely a band coming from the alt-rock camp of music. There are a lot of influences from bands like Sonic Youth, Husker Du, even Smashing Pumpkins to some extent. The vocals are a pained wail quite similar to many other bands on the Saddle Creek record label but while their label mates seem to concentrate mainly on the emotional side of love, The Faint are all about the physical stuff baby (song titles including Sex is Personal, Worked Up So Sexual and Casual Sex). It’s quite a refreshing change from angst really. Good, randy and retro electro rock for all to enjoy.
