Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends
Formed in Long Island, home of Brand New and The Movielife, Taking Back Sunday had created quite a following. Ears were eager for an album. It failed to disappoint.
The opener “You Know How I Do” sets the barriers out for an emotional 30 odd minutes. A catchy chorus and guitars that compliment the warm, striking voice of Adam Lazzara provides a successful structure that grabs your attention and makes you listen very carefully to every word spoken. The lyrics are insightful, catchy and well thought out, backed up by good, clean guitar sounds, some are begging for a good jump around (Timberwolves at New Jersey). The music has character but the lyrics are the winner. Not along ago I can recall a few friends and I, singing at the top of our voices to “Cute Without the E” at the Cavern when the track was played in between FCG and The Queers.
One of the best feature of the album is, in some parts, both voices go extraordinary well together, creating a kind of impassioned effect that when in the right mood, sends tingling sensations down your arm. Best examples of tracks that do this is Great Romances of the 21st Century and Your So Last Summer
Since this album was released ‘TBS’ have lost bass player Shaun Cooper, guitarist and vocalist John Nolan and his sister and part time vocalist Michelle Nolan. After leaving TBS, they all feature in a new band, Straylight Run. Despite rumours of a break-up, replacements go by the names of Fred Mascherino (guitar, vocals) and Matt Rubano (bass).
One can only hope that they carry on with the fantastic job done by their predecessors. Tell All Your Friends is a very special album. Not one weak track but an album you will listen to again and again and…… 9.5 out of 10
