Spoon – Kill The Moonlight
For a band with nine members mentioned in their liner notes (including a
dabouke player, whatever that may be) this is very minimalist music. From the
keyboards, bass and handclapping of The Way We Get By to the beat boxing which
provides the backbone of Stay Don’t Go, a vacuum cleaner is even used at one
point (or so I’ve read) you’d be very hard pressed to find a song on this
album which uses more than a few instruments at any one time. This is by no
means a bad thing, the simplicity of these songs gives them a wonderfully wild
vibe to which goes hand in hand perfectly with Britt Daniel’s hedonistic song
writing and laid back but desperate vocals (a bit similar to Julian Casablancas’).
The range of instruments and sounds this band creates and the quite sparing use
of them means that this album is full of very different songs. Sometimes this
can lead to a slightly disjointed listening experience but Spoon pull it off
very well, every song sounds like a Spoon song even if none of them sound the
same. Constantly inventive musically and a great listen to boot Spoon are a very
good band who everyone should hear at least once in their lives. With any luck
they’ll have enough sense to listen a few more times too.
