Various Artists – High Voltage
This is a budget compilation of local bands who didn’t win the Singles Club competition at the Cavern. If nothing else it is a good example of how good the winning bands must be. There are a lot of bands on here incorporating a good range of styles from anthemic ska (Robolint – A Bear and the Le-Mon-Adé) to acid-jazz-funk fusion (Mad Library – Stevie T), from angry metalcore (Snowball – Vai Roose) to solo acoustic songs (John Shoe! – Did You Actually Say Freedom?). It is a very impressive mix of local talent. Highlights (other than the ones I’ve already mentioned, which are all very good) include prodigal youngsters Resonate and instrumental space rockers Saii Corporation. There are some tracks that aren’t as great (The Climb, Skatanic, Monikeers) but this is more to do with lower production values and my taste in music than there being anything really wrong with the songs. There really is something for everyone on this CD, and at £3 for 20 tracks you really can’t afford not to buy it.
