Simian – Chemistry Is What We Are
Psychadelia is really back in isn’t it? Creating music like the strange sheep/dog creature in the cover art Simian mix together things which seem quite normal and come up with something quite odd. Like many bands in the late sixties (Especially the Beatle’s more trippy moments) this album proves that something can be weird, wonderful and still keep its poppier side alive. Admittedly there are more than a few cases of strange atmospherics and spooky harmonising, the odd smattering of inexplicable beeps, a few bizarre samples and occasional references to mythical creatures in the lyrics but in the end this is just very chilled out, very catchy indie pop. Sort of like one of those weird but pleasant daydreams you sometimes have in musical form. ‘Doba’ being the weirdest, ‘One Dimension’ being the nearest to normal (probably) this album is going to appeal to old hippies and young indie kids alike.
